Tráth na gCeist

Body:

The annual Allianz Cumann na mBunscol, Cill Mhantáin Tráth na gCeist took place in the Brockagh Centre, Laragh on Thursday night last.

We held it mid-week on a Thursday, later in the year with bright evenings for travelling with the hope that more schools would attend, however, unfortunately the attendance was down.  It is a pity as there is a lot of work put into organising the quiz and it is always a great nights entertainment. We hope that next year the interest will be renewed in this event for all schools in Wicklow in the Cumann na mBunscol calendar. In saying that we had Greystones Educate Together attending for the first time, we welcome them and hope they will mark it in their calendar as an annual event.  The other teams were Grangecon, Kilcoole A and B, Talbotstown, St. Cronan’s A and B, Rathcoyle and Rathdrum.  Jim O’Riordán, Cathaoirleach, Cumann na mBunscol, Cill Mhantáin welcomed everyone and did a fine job as MC on the night.

There were eight rounds in total with a picture round, irish geography and history round, two GAA rounds, county and club colours round, general knowledge/current affairs round, general sporting round and to finish a round with a difference.  This last round was exciting as it gave all teams a chance to challenge the leaders as question one required one answer worth one point, question two, two answers and so on to question ten worth ten points with a possible fifty five points for the round.  There were lots of spot prizes and a raffle was held while final corrections were made.  Peter Keogh spoke and passed on words of wisdom to all the boys and girls in attendance.

After the final calculations Talbotstown emerged victorious in 1st place, Kilcoole A in 2nd place and Rathdrum in 3rd place.

We were lucky enough to have the Heineken Cup there and all winning teams were photographed with it.

We thank the Brockagh Centre for their fine facilities, all the parents and schools that attended, Annemarie McKenna, Michéal Ó Murchú, Emer Fahy, Jim O’Riordán and Pamela McDermott who all helped out on the night.
