Allianz on the wearing of gumshields in Primary Schools

The rule change of wearing a gumshield in all under age games to minor level now affects the insurance cover of school children who play gaelic football as a school activity under the governance of Cumann na mBunscol which is also seen to be under the governance of the GAA. Full compliance of the rule is now necessary for all games/ activity organised by Cumann na mBunscol.  The visit of outside coaches to schools under the umberella of the GAA/Cumann namBunscol will be covered by Allianz School insurance under the following conditions and explicit understanding that: The coaching activity in the school is taking place under the cover of the school insurance. Due care and attention is taken with the safety of the activity under the supervision of a teacher.  Children will be informed that the wearing of gumshields for gaelic football is compulsory. The coach and teacher will check that each child is wearing a gumshield. In the event of an accident due to the removal of or the misplacing of agumshield then Allianz will not attach any liability to the school in this instance when it can be demonstrated that the school took every action to inform the children and applied reasonable care and attention. In short Allianz will protect the school’s liability even if something goes wrong, having met the basic conditions of reasonable care.  What games teachers may or may not encourage due to the compulsory wearing of gumshields is a matter for each school but it is clear that there can be no ignoring the rule of wearing the gumshield and as in any sporting activity there is due care and attention to child welfare and safety.
