Great Days Football at Day 1 of the Boys’ Allianz Coughlan Cup

Body:

As winter came to a close the primary schools of North East Wicklow began their qualification round for the Allianz sponsored Coughlan Cup. Held over 2 days, Wednesday 27th and Thursday 28th Feb, 19 schools competed, fielding 27 teams in what was a very encouraging show of skills from the boys, and some girls, of 5th & 6th classes.  The first day saw some of the bigger schools field two and three teams in 3 very competitive groups. Each group played a minimum of 3 games or 60mins of football and tournament coordinator Wicklow GDA Garrett Doyle is looking forward to seeing more of the same on Finals Day in a fortnight’s time.  The second day saw some of the smaller schools compete, fielding 13 teams in total, spread over 10 schools. Once again a very high standard was visible over the three groups. Some great passages of play, excellent teamwork and superb hook kicks for scores were the highlight of Day 1.  Finals Day will take place on Wed 13th & Thurs 14th March.  As ever Allianz Cumann na mBunscoll Chill Mhantáin (North East) would like to thank all the participating schools (children & teachers) for making it a worthwhile tournament. A big Go Raibh Maith Agaibh also goes to Liam McGraynor and Bray Emmets for hosting, to Micheál Ó Murchú and Garrett Doyle for coordinating the tournament and the TY students for putting their newly certified refereeing skills to the fore, a great display all round!
